Value Creation Via the Collaborative Enterprise

Organizations are today working in a very demanding and fast evolving market place. There is an imperative need to introduce competitive products - accelerating the time to market while maintaining that innovative edge to capture the consumer mind. The number of players in the product development chain has been multiplying due to pressures of globalization. While many organizations have tackled this by outsourcing their manufacturing, customer relationship, supply chain requirements -- this has primarily led to improving transactional efficiencies it has so far been minimal or zero in adding to the edge required to keep competitors at bay.A robust Collaborative Enterprise addresses the need for all the stakeholders in the product development value chain to effectively work as one single enterprise while maintaining their distinct identities as well as business focus leading to enhanced value creation.

Polyplan Technologies
Bridging the Gap between Manufacturing and Engineering

In the past 25 years, leading manufacturers have been digitizing their information and promoting collaboration between their core business functions, to drive product development process efficiency and profitability. Among the various initiatives carried out to support this goal two major information system pillars have stood out: systems that support product engineering and systems that support production execution. Though these pillars have brought some significant benefits to the manufacturers who have implemented them, even the most successful ones are still struggling to achieve the competitive leap they had initially envisioned and still have a remaining cultural and technical gap between manufacturing and engineering. This gap still exists because what ERP systems need to manage production execution does not directly come out of CAD/PDM systems. You need to transform the form/fit/function output of your CAD/PDM systems into the time/cost/quality input required by ERP systems.

In this presentation, you will see how Polyplan's manufacturing process design workbench, embedded in your PTC PLM environment, will enable your organization to effectively bridge the gap between manufacturing and engineering. With the Polyplan cMPM™ solution, your users will systematically drive the manufacturability of product designs, smoothly control the impact of changes down to the shop floor, and reduce production ramp-up time and cost; to ultimately achieve the competitive edge envisioned since the beginning of the digital era.

This is a data-sharing feature introduced in Pro/ENGINEER release 2001 and has several advantages as well as disadvantages. It includes aspects of the external copygeom, merge, layout and family table functionality but offers some advantages not found in any of these. For example, use of inheritance in lieu of a skeleton may help you to better organize your top-down assemblies. Inheritance can offer some of the advantages of a layout, (global parameters and relations accessible from any part), and geometry sharing of a copygeom with added ability to pass patterns from the skeleton.
Expert User Presentation Design for Sheet Metal Versus Sheet Metal Design

By Phillip D. Vaughan, Stewart & Stevenson

Pro/ENGINEER has an awesome set of tools and applications to develop sheet metal parts. However, one of the most important elements in sheet metal design is to understand the manufacturing limits of the material being used. Just because a part can be modeled with Pro/ENGINEER does not necessarily mean the part can be manufactured or is the most efficient design. This is where the Design for Sheet Metal philosophy comes into play: the proper methods of designing for sheet metal parts for efficient manufacturing. This presentation will review common mistakes, basic material selection, bending formulae, tooling setups, part layouts, proper bend relief design, and fixture-less assembly design. There will be several live Pro/E demonstrations during the presentation.

Expert User Presentation Managing and Driving Models Using Skeleton Assemblies, BMX and MDX

By Heinrich Bartels, Stewart & Stevenson

In the past, models have been managed using skeleton parts but this approach made it difficult to represent 3D motion. However, when using connection constraints (MDX) to connect skeleton parts within a skeleton assembly this motion can be accurately described. Dimensions from individual components of the skeleton assembly can then be driven into sub-components with inheritance features, which allows driving dimensions from the skeleton components to be shown on drawings. Upper level assemblies can readily be optimized by using the skeleton assemblies in conjunction with analysis features (BMX).

Expert User Presentation Optimal Synthesis of Mechanisms with the Pro/ENGINEER Environment

By Dr. Andreas Vlahinos, Advanced Engineering Solutions, LLC, and Matthew Loew, Stewart & Stevenson

We will present a computer-aided design methodology that generates feasible and promising conceptual designs of mechanisms to accomplish a set of desired motions. The method automates and optimizes the iteration between synthesis and analysis of mechanisms by integrating Pro/ENGINEER's sketcher, MDO and BMX capabilities. The process will be demonstrated with an example of a load handling mechanism. The desired positions of the load, the region of allowable attachment points, and the keep out zone will be provided. The method will result in the dimensional synthesis of a linkage. The resulting linkage can be automatically optimized with behavioral modeling for the transmission angle, the reaction forces, or the motor power.

Expert User Presentation Product Development with FEA - A Linear Approach with Non-Linear Analysis

By Dr. Yenkai Wang, ArvinMeritor

The goal of product development is to launch with minimum time and cost. To take advantage of the technological improvements in finite-element analysis (FEA) such as P-element formulation and automatic mesh generation to accelerate the design process, a methodology to linearize the nonlinear analysis has been developed. We will explore a case study, validated by laboratory tests, using Pro/MECHANICA on wheel hub assembly of a heavy-duty vehicle brake system. Based on the methodology, FEA guidelines become available to design engineers for routine practice. This results in increased product quality and performance, faster time to market and reduced product development costs.

Expert User Presentation User-Defined Features: From Mystery to Magic By Ron Grabau, HP User-Defined Features (UDF's) are a great productivity tool yet many people avoid them. UDF's can be confusing and intimidating if you don't know what the options are and how to leverage them. By attending this presentation, you will be able to apply UDF's in ways you may not have considered possible. Increasing your use of UDF's will increase productivity and provide a way to apply and share standardized features within models.
Expert User Presentation Using Wildfire A Different Way: Proving Form, Ridiculously Robust For Designers

By Bart Brejcha, deeplabs.com & proetools.com

This live demonstration of advanced applications of Pro/SURFACE and ISDX will explore non-traditional uses of Wildfire. Most industrial design projects start by sketching or carving in foam. Sketching, tracing and retracing a concept so as to deliver multiple iterations and mature the shape or form of the concept is the normal mode for design projects. Once a form is established, industrial designers pass that form to engineers or other persons who must capture the form using Pro/ENGINEER. We call this capturing form. By challenging accepted notions regarding software tools, we shall demonstrate how to prove 3D form by intelligently harnessing the power of Pro/SURFACE and ISDX. Our philosophy, you don't know what it is you want until you see it, requires methodology resulting in extremely flexible, well built models. Our techniques support rapid generation of complex models with ease in minutes. One of several examples to be demonstrated will include a typical outdoor plastic chair (model constructed in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire) that can be quickly redefined into a design that sheds water without puddling. We will show that anyone can model more efficiently and prove form by leveraging well thought out parent-child constraints and a plan of attack.
