Mathcad® Agenda
For 2009, the Mathcad agenda will offer an expanded two-day track on conference Tuesday and Wednesday. The track will include a product roadmap session from PTC and several expert presentations from the community.
We're pleased to introduce new and expanded content for this year's Mathcad track. The following course will be offered two times during the World Event.
Dealing with Noisy and Challenging Datasets with Mathcad®
If you engineer products that exhibit motion such as aircraft, ground-based vehicles, compacters, hand-held drills, etc., or components in these items, it is likely that you have or will be confronted with "challenging data." Common examples include noisy accelerometer data, accelerometer-derived displacement data distorted by large amounts of drifting, and other noisy data from transient dynamics, impact forces, rough surface profiles…the list is long. Noisy data can easily and unintentionally be created by doing simple operations like computing the derivative of a dataset to obtain an estimate of the continual slope of a data curve. If this data is not collected and handled properly, further distortions called aliasing can occur. When confronted with such data, many mechanical engineers are unaware that tools can be used to properly collect and process such data, ultimately making sense out of what appeared to be a mess.
Using an interactive format with Mathcad and Kornucopia® software, this short course will explain why these noisy datasets occur, how to collect the data correctly to avoid aliasing, and how to easily apply filtering tools to remove the noise/distortions; uncovering accurate and easily understood data curves. Unlike typical EE-based seminars of filtering, this seminar is presented in the language of mechanical engineering with numerous real-world mechanical engineering examples.
Our instructor, Ted Diehl, Ph.D., Bodie Technology, Inc. (www.BodieTech.com), has over 20 years experience in the simulation and experimental communities solving challenging industrial problems related to nonlinear structural mechanics with a creative mix of approaches. Dr. Diehl has pioneered many uses of filtering and digital signal processing algorithms for applications in mechanical engineering.
